NAMIBIA

Namibia, the country with vast places, breathtaking contrasts like oceans, dunes, mountains and desert with less population is one of the best tourist destinations in the African continent. This African nation is easy to travel around, beautiful, safe, with the locals ever helpful and plenty to see in wildlife! Many feel that the country has everything to entice tourists. Namibia is one of the first African nations to take up conservation of flora, fauna and the wildlife seriously. It is also the first nation, to incorporate wildlife protection and conservation into its Constitution, hence one can see all kinds of wildlife in this country! This is also one of the major reasons for many Hollywood movies to be produced in its dramatic landscapes. Blockbusters like the Space Odyssey, Mad Max Fury Road were made here.

Welcome to Sossusvlei

As a precursor to your visit to the desert country, you will stay at one of the finest lodges in Namibia, The Sossusvlei Desert Lodge.

This lodge is accessible only through aircraft, a light aircraft that will land on the footsteps of the lodge. Exciting isn't it?

Sossusvlei-Desert-Lodge

Your Sossusvlei Lodge

You arrive at the breathtakingly beautiful and elegant Sossusvlei Desert Lodge which is situated in the heart of the Namib desert. The moment you step into the environs of this lodge you will realise the enticing silence and the quietness of the place, marked by the gentle swishing of the breeze singing through the tall trees surrounding the lodge. So great is the silence that it will for a moment shock you into numbness. But as your inner engines calm down and get used to the silence you will find momentary peace seeping into your pores. As you gaze out of the glass walls of your suite you find dunes and stony outcrops waiting to be discovered. The desert pulls you out of your reverie that you would like to put on your shoes and wander into its sands. The hotel is fully equipped with all the modernities and state of the art amenities. It has air-conditioned rooms and fireplaces for summers and chilly winters. So you can either choose to retire to your rooms and get adjusted to the calmness of the area or wander into one of its eating areas generally spread under the canopy of the open skies and indulge in its tasty cuisines.

The Dunes of Sossusvlei

After a hearty breakfast, make sure you eat well as there is going to be enough physical activity in this country, under the open skies, set off on a guided walk through the desert and learn to distinguish the unique plants and animals found in the region. Or indulge in a bicycle adventure trail through the dunes of Sossusvlei famously known as the spine-tingling scenic attractions in the desert region, which is not normally seen in any other country. The biggest attraction in these dunes is in scaling the ‘Big Daddy’ or the tallest dune measuring, 325 metres. For many adventure seekers, the thrill in climbing the Big Daddy is the view at the top. One can get a breathtaking view of the vast expanse of the Namib Desert with its peaks and troughs.

You can call it a day after scaling down the dune, return to the lodge and relax your tired muscles in the pool or go to the observatory and star gaze into the clear skies with an astronomer guiding your vision through a sophisticated telescope. Dine under the stars where delicious dinners are served by lantern light in the dunes. Soak in the nightlife as you sip excellent rare wines that the hotel acquires from all over the world and retire for the night.

Discover the Desert Wildlife

You can choose to relax in the lodge and indulge in some massage to soothe your tired body or go up into the skies through a hot air balloon and get a guided tour of the desert from the top.

There are nature drives arranged by the hotel twice a day. Register and hop into one of the caravans that will take you into the forest to see desert wildlife like the springbok, oryx, the two kinds of zebra,  the Burchell’s zebra and the mountain zebra, the bat-eared foxes and the various kinds of lizards and insects. You can also learn about the numerous plants that have adapted in their own way to the harsh conditions of the desert. Guides will point out seeds that have lain dormant for many dry months waiting for the rains to sprout into plants. In other places in the Namib Desert, one can surprisingly come across colourful lichens that have survived due to the fog that comes in from the Atlantic Ocean. These lichens provide sustenance as water to some animals in the region.

It is the last and final day of your stay at the Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, so gather as many moments as you can and fill up your heart and your bags with memories that you could carry in the form of souvenirs or trophies or the numerous bric ‘n’ brac that is available at the hotel’s gift shop. Hop onto the light aircraft that will take you back to your place of destination.

Please note: It would be good to combine this trip with one of your Zambia or South African trips or even as an extension of your safari to save on time yet cover the most interesting places in your African sojourn. Make it a point to chalk out an itinerary that has Namibia as this will be one of the most memorable African visits that you would have ever undertaken.
